The Beginning...
Poor and Deserving Students Foundation (PODESFO) is a scholarship program of the parish for the poor and deserving students of Socorro. It was founded on March 17, 2009 during the administration of Fr. Benjamin C. Unabia, Jr., OSA (Parish Priest) and Fr. Leo Mario F. Singco, OSA (Parochial Vicar) and through the initiative of Ms. Daisy E. Perez. PoDeSFo Scholarship program formally started in June of 2009 for the Academic Year 2009 - 2010. Ms. Perez saw and felt the need for some Catholic students in Socorro (the 1st Augustinian local mission post), who have the eagerness to study but cannot pursue their studies because of financial problems. The economic status of the family hinder them to at least finish their high school studies. Thus, the foundation was established. Since 2009 there had been more than 30 beneficiaries of the scholarship grant. PoDeSFo had also extended the coverage of the program to college students, which was before only for high school students. The administrators saw the demand and necessity of the situation. The funding of this foundation is coming from the generous people particularly in Cebu. The Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish and the Augustinian community in Socorro are grateful to them who are supporting the cause of PoDeSFo (Poor and Deserving Students Foundation). May the good Lord continue to shower you more blessings in life and good health for you to share all the more. We still invite more generous people who are willing to support these students to school and those who share with our simple but real advocacy. In Deum! Let’s do it… The Augustinian Way… Walay kabus nga walay ikahatag ug walay adunahan nga wala manginahanglan.
Poverty is never a hindrance to one’s success. Ang kakabus dili babag sa kalampusan. Ang buhay ay parang gulong. Pulong pa sa usa ka inahan: “Ang edukasyon maoy bugtong katigayonan nga among ikabilin kaninyo kay dili man kini makawat ug wala nay lain pa…” As of the 2014-2015 Academic year, PoDeSFo is helping five scholars, two high school students and three college students. Since 2009 the foundation had supported 14 students in their tuition fees. Six of them finished their high school and two graduated from college. While, the remaining six students were considered as independent since their respective families were able to send them to school on their own.
