SITIO LAWIGAN CHAPEL
Sitio Lawigan is part of Barangay Sering located in udnerstand eastern part of Bucas Grande Island. Around 1980, two families from San Miguel, Dapa headed by Felix Bayeta and Germogenes Apollo tried their luck and explored the rich fishing ground of the island. Since then, they resided in the island together with some of their friends who followed them. Theystarted to form a small community.
Sotico Dizon, an influential and respected leader of a group called Farmers, tried to change the name of the sitio into Sitio Dizon but it was not approved by Jose Alabat Sr., who was then the mayor. Thus the name of the place retained. A certain Andres Consigna, an Aglipayan, who frequently visited the growing memberof residents in the place, learned that the residents wanted to practice their Catholic faith. At that time, the Missionary of Charity Brothers (MC) started their missionary apostolate in Socorro and they were invited by Andres Consigna to visit the residents of Sitio Lawigan. The MC brothers, spearheaded by Bros. Benedict and Vincent, visited the place and catechized some of the residents. They were blessed with the positive response of the people, who later on tried to make a visitble sign of their faith - a chapel. In 1993, a small chapel was erected made up of woodsticks and nipa. One of the families that migrated in Lawigan was Mario and Luisa Bayeta. They had a daughter that joined the Augustinian Sisters of the Divine Love, after Sr. Rose Bayeta learned that they have a new chapel she suggested that their patron would be the Our Lady of Fatima. It was unanimously approvved by the faithful. They celebrated their local fiests every 13th of October. At present, there are twenty families living in Sitio Lawigan, mostly Catholics. Since they are increasing, the priests of the Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish have a regular once a month Sunday Mass with the faithful to guide them in their spiritual journey. |
